Hello mates. Still enjoying the victory from Wednesday? I am! Unfortunately I have forgotten two days in a row to bring my Liverpool scarf to school to show it as well…

The European Cup final of 1981, against… Real Madrid.

Kind of reminds of the gamethis week. A Real Madrid wanting show-off (dribbling, diving, complaining with the referee, etc) and a very focused and tactically and defensively strong.

The re-match on Anfield is the 10th of March, the usual time at 19.45 GMT. I am hoping for another win – it is so more pleasing to win by style, not having to mean wearing make-up and style your hair to look good on the pitch, but meaning winning with more goals? Right? That I reckon in Liverpool’s strength.

Sincerely yours,

RedWalk

Hello, mates. Guessing that you are as happy today as moi?

How to comennce now, well, Liverpool was tipped by a lot of people as to go through from this double leg – and now we are well on our way.

Tactically, a perfect game from Liverpool’s side – showing the importance and brilliance of Rafael Benitez’ mind. Our defence (for the day: Arbeloa, Aurelio, Carragher, Skrtel; having Daniel Agger injured) made a superb game, supported by the hard-working midfield (Benayoun, Riera, Mascherano, Alonso). Fernando Torres up front hard a really hard time, though, having Juande Ramos fearing him since the meetings between Tottenham and Liverpool. Pepe, the Brazilian Portuguese, did a good job neutralising him, and Fabio Cannavaro did an equally good job with taking out Dirk Kuyt, accompanying Torres in attack. Not so surprisingly Liverpool were extra defensive in the absence of Steven Gerrard, who only featured for the last five minutes.

However, Liverpool’s defence did a better job with Gonzalo Giguain, Raul, and Fernando Cago. Cago, the important centre playmaker was eradicated and was obviously frustrated (starting diving and complaining to the referee) while neither Higuain nor Raul had any chances of scoring. The only one problem Liverpool faced was Arjen Robben, the ex-Chelsea player was in mood, and his speed and technique provided him with 6 (!) good shots from the centre of the pitch (causing José Reina  to one top save).

Liverpool’s defence held Real Madrid on Santiago Bernabeu for 90 minutes, and I was enjoying the game when the player Rafa failed to sign a year ago, Gabriel Heinze, pulled Kuyt in his shirt.  Fabio Aurelio, having outconcurred Emiliano Insua for the left-back position for the evening, stepped up and delivered a hard and bent cross for the box. I immediately thought, honestly, that it was a good ball. And whoopsy-daisy, there Yossi Benayoun (who by the way has done a relatively good season overall, not perfect, but decent) out of all the players popped up with a header – 0-1!

Overall – Rafa’s win (double – now I can bet he can pressurise the owners for a better contract if he still wants one), but in the end a Real Madrid error provided for the extra two points.

Quoting Rafa: “I am really pleased – pleased for the players, the team, the club and for the fans. To win here in Madrid is very difficult and I think we did a very good job. The players were working so hard – they deserved to win.”

Sincerely yours,

RedWalk
